Yeah, it's a bit early, but my son has been making me listen to X-Mas music all week. It quickly became apparent that I need more variety in my Christmas tunes to keep me sane as the years go by. Anyway, aside from that, I have decided that "Just Like Christmas" by Low is the best modern Christmas song out there. I guess I should clarify - by "modern", I mean written and performed in the last 25 years or so. This disqualifies the obvious winner of Best Christmas Song of All Time, "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love and Phil Spector.

"Back in the 60's, my mother and her friend Susan were air stewardesses working on the flights between Miami and the Bahamas. This was the age when air travel was very glamorous and only the rich could afford to fly. At the time they were making the Bond film "Thunderball" with Sean Connery in the Bahamas, and Susan managed to get an invite to one of the many parties the crew had.

At one of these parties Susan meets Sean Connery who was, at the time, one of the world's sexiest men. Susan was no hambeast herself - in the un-PC 60's they only hired very good looking air stewardesses. Connery invites Susan back to his hotel room for a nightcap, and they go off together. Obviously Connery pulls his moves once he's in the hotel room, but she wards off his advances. She had a boyfriend, and she had an early flight to make the next day. So she ends up leaving with nothing happening, much to Connery's chagrin.

A few months later she has married her boyfriend and is now visibly pregnant but is still working. As she goes down the airplane aisle, she suddenly sees Sean Connery and stops and says hello.

He looks her up and down, stops at her round belly and says, "I shee your not shaying no anymore then.""

DVD Audio to MP3 on OSX

Just so it's out on the internet and all that, MacTheRipper to put the DVD on your harddrive and remove any lame restrictions and ffmpegX to convert the audio from the .VOB file into an MP3. I just wanted to turn a couple of concert DVDs I own into MP3s, the only downside is that your audio isn't broken up into discrete tracks, but it's a concert, so it was meant to be listened to sequentially.

Errol Morris is one of the greatest living filmmakers on the planet.

Great interview with Morris from the Onion AV Club. If you've never seen the guy's work, I recommend "Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control" as a starter.

His first film - "Gates of Heaven", a film that Ebert says is one of the 10 best of all time - has just come out on DVD. I've wanted to see this film for years, so I'm pretty excited.

You should also check out the essay that Morris mentions in the interview. Great, great stuff.

The story-line of this sketch is as follows: A character called “Hard Gay” (by comedian Masaki Sumitani aka “Lazer Ramon”) thinks that the “Hoo!” in Yahoo! is stolen from his often used exclamation and goes to visit Yahoo! headquarters to try to get a deal. He wants to be in their ads, even goes to prove that he's popular by auctioning off his hat to Yahoo! online auction site. Sure enough, the hat's bidding jumps to about $250 pretty quickly. It's obvious Yahoo! cannot use this character for promotion, so “Hard Gay” goes off to prove what he can do. There's no shocking material in this unless you're offended by hip-thrusts. Whether or not it's funny is up to you. Note that Yahoo! offices sport a massage room."

Emacs bindings in OSX

So I came across this while searching for some Emacs fixins for OSX and I left a very happy geek. While the instructions are a little dated, all you have to do is install TextExtras to ~/Library/InputManagers and his DefaultKeyBinding.dict file to ~/Library/KeyBindings and you're good to go (not sure if you have to reboot). It works on my 10.4.2 box in Adium, TextEdit and Word so far that I've noticed.
